If you need to use Editable AutoCAD files in Adobe Illustrator the following options are recommended.
Best Option: Create a PDF file of the AutoCAD file.
Alternate Option (mixed results): Save the AutoCAD DWG file to R2000 format.
Not Recommended: Exporting the DWG file as an EPS can corrupt or distort the original.
Tip: If consistent & specific lineweights are required in Illustrator, set your lineweights to bylayer inside AutoCAD.

For settling various troubles related to problem .ai files you can use illustrator recovery. It uses modern ways of repairing illustrator data. The program can't modify source data during restoration and launches under any PC software configuration.
